Don’t leave the country without valid passports, visas – FG warns Nigerians
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a warning regarding an increase in deceitful migration operations and irregular border activities run by individuals and criminal organizations throughout the nation, alerting Nigerians that exiting the country without appropriate travel documentation is unlawful and poses severe personal risks.

In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, which was signed by its public relations officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the service indicated that criminal organizations have been targeting vulnerable groups, notably young women, by luring them with false job offers, educational opportunities, and the prospect of improved lives overseas, often resulting in forced labor, human trafficking, and various forms of abuse.
"Leaving Nigeria without a valid passport, visa, and necessary documents is against the law and carries significant risks," stated the service, noting that no legitimate travel can occur without adhering to formal immigration regulations or through authorized border checkpoints.
The NIS cautioned the public to be very wary of unsolicited sponsorship proposals, travel funding, or any so-called "assistance" for abroad journeys from unknown or unverified individuals, which is a common tactic used by trafficking networks.
The public was encouraged to verify the legitimacy of all travel options and job offers via proper government channels, avoid engaging with individuals or agents promoting illegal migration, and report any suspicious activities, movements, or individuals associated with such schemes to the closest NIS office or relevant security agency.
Additionally, the service urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain watchful and educate young people about the dangers associated with irregular migration and human trafficking.
Individuals wanting more information or wishing to report dubious activities can contact the NIS through its official accounts on X, Instagram, and Facebook, all using the handle @nigimmigration, or by calling its round-the-clock contact center numbers: 09121900655, 09121556359, and 09121477092. WhatsApp numbers 0916087800 and 09117717772, along with a whistleblower email at nis.actu@immigration.gov.ng, are also provided.
"The Nigeria Immigration Service is steadfast in its dedication to securing Nigeria's borders and safeguarding citizens from exploitation," the statement concluded.
