Qamar Adegoke took the stage under the careful observation of coach Eric Chelle on Sunday, May 3, scoring the crucial goal that led Shooting Stars SC to a 3-2 victory over Nasarawa United in an exciting Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match.
According to Naija News, Chelle has opened the national team selection process to exceptional players from the NPFL as well as uncapped Nigerians playing abroad in preparation for the Unity Cup scheduled to take place from May 26 to May 30.
The Unity Cup occurs outside the FIFA international window, with Nigeria set to defend the championship title they earned last year against teams from India, Jamaica, and Zimbabwe.
Chelle observed a match significant for continental qualification in Ibadan. Shooting Stars required a win to overtake their opponents and establish a strong start. Lucky Emmanuel scored twice within the first thirty minutes, giving the home team a commanding lead.
Before halftime, Nasarawa United answered back with a goal from JoFrank Istifanus. Then, Habibu Alakija equalized for the visitors in the 57th minute, creating a dramatic finish.
Adegoke, who previously played for Nasarawa United, made the decisive play in the 77th minute. His goal elevated Shooting Stars to third place with 57 points after 36 games and increased his league total to 10, placing him in contention for the Golden Boot with two matches remaining.
Out of his goals this season, nine have been scored as a substitute, showcasing his rising impact in the club's rebuilding efforts. He has netted six goals at home and four on the road this season.
If Shooting Stars maintain their momentum, they could secure a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Their next challenge will be away against Niger Tornadoes, while Chelle is anticipated to observe Tuesday’s match between Ikorodu City and Wikki Tourists to evaluate additional talents.
